Lies I've Told Myself
There’s one way to be beautiful and it looks like youth, flawless skin, shiny hair, straight teeth.
Skin deep, surface level.
There’s one way to be healthy and it looks like a number on the scale and the steps on a Fitbit.
Rigid and reduced.
There’s one way to eat well and it looks like rules, time tables, good/bad lists. Pleasure and desire, either erased entirely or locked up tight only to be let out on “cheat days” but sometimes (often) break free at 4pm leaving guilt and shame in their wake.
Rules, judgement, shame and guilt.
There’s one way to be a good mother and it looks like do-it-yourself, in a selflessness way, to brass-ring level standards.
Alone, erased and never good enough.
Lies are wrapped up in the language of “there’s one way”. Lies are loud and create a shaky safety that collapses under the simplest need from real life.
Truth tells us there’s always more ways than one. Truth invites in depth, flexibility, holism, Spirit. Truth leads us to compassion, connection, resilience, and worth.
