What's For Dinner? How To Make A Decision.

You are not alone if you are having a hard time deciding what to eat for a meal or snack.

If you’ve always relied on the strict rules of a diet, it can feel scary and confusing to make a food choice based on your own wants and desires. When moving away from dieting, there is an invitation to think beyond food as nutrients and energy.

Here’s one idea for a stepwise approach that may help guide your decision making.

Check in with yourself on the following traits of food. Do you want something that is...

  • Hot, Cold or Room Temperature? (Temperature)

  • Airy, Chewy, Crunchy, Creamy, Crumbly, Juicy, Soft, Silky, Tender, Firm (Texture)

  • Savory, Sweet, Bitter, Sour, Salty, Tangy (Flavor)

  • Bright, Neutral, Dark (Color)

Do I want to eat with my hands or utensils?

Do I want food that is mixed together or separate?

How much time, energy, and skill goes into the food I want?

Examine the food you have on hand. How close can you get to what you really want to eat right now? What can I substitute for what I want if I don’t have access to what I really desire?

This process can be used at meal and snack time. It can also come in handy when making a meal plan and grocery list. Planning is your friend! It helps relieve the stress and confusion that can happen at meal and snack time.

Other factors that influence meal choice: culture, budget, accessibility, season, celebrations/holidays, and so much more!
